Many people want to keep giant schnauzer puppies off the furniture to avoid loose hair and keep the furniture clean. But even if you share everything, including the furniture, with your canine family members, there may exist other good reasons for teaching your Giants to stay off the furniture. Couches, sofas and other furniture may be at a height that is dangerous for giant schnauzer puppies. Keep in mind that puppies are growing and becoming familiar with their bodies and their coordination. Jumping up on or down from furniture may be hard on the joints and could cause injury to the pups. If you do allow giant schnauzer puppies on the furniture, be sure to supervise them when making their leaps.
If you allow your giant schnauzer puppies to sleep on the furniture, take some caution if you have smaller children in your house. Remember that alot of furniture will be at or around face level. Small children can startle a sleeping puppy by quickly running past or yelling as they run past. While your giant schnauzer puppies may not be aggressive by nature, any startled dog may react in a negative manner.
If you simply do not have the time to supervise constantly it may be a good idea to train your giant schnauzer puppies to stay off furniture for the safety of both the Giants and the children. Additionally, it is easier to teach the Giants where to rest and where not to rest if this is done early, before the habit of resting and sleeping on the furniture becomes a habit. First and foremost, remember that giant schnauzer puppies will rest and sleep on the furniture for the same reason humans rest and sleep on furniture, for comfort. If you are going to train your Giants to stay off the furniture, make sure they have a comfortable spot with the rest of the family, such as a dog bed, comfortable mat or even a piece of furniture just for the Giants.
To teach the giant schnauzer puppies to stay off the furniture, make sure everyone in the home is on the same page. The furniture rule must be a consistent rule. If one family member allows the Giants on the furniture while another trains the puppies to stay off the furniture, this will simply confuse the giant schnauzer puppies and will not achieve the intended goal. Try not to be angry or overly aggressive when removing the puppies from the Rather be gentle and calm, again, rushing giant schnauzer puppies from the furniture can cause injury when jumping down. Direct them from the furniture to their designated resting space, such as their dog bed. Reward the Giants for moving from the furniture to their bed, teaching them not just where not to sleep, but also where to sleep.
Again, remember that giant schnauzer puppies want to be on the furniture for the same reasons that you want to be on the furniture. Resting on a hard floor or a cold floor can be less than relaxing or comfortable. If you intend to keep your giant schnauzer puppies off the furniture entirely, ensure that they have comfortable spots to rest, relax and sleep and be consistent with the furniture rule.
