GIANT SCHNAUZER PUPPIES AND THE FIVE BASIC COMMANDS

Communication is key in any relationship, even those between pet and owner.  While many owners of giant schnauzer puppies will go above and beyond basic training, many believe "basic training" for any puppy should involve five different commands.  Teaching your giant schnauzer puppies these five commands will help to establish a strong bond with the Giants.  In addition, teaching these five commands will assist in the control of the Giants and aid in instilling proper social behavior.

SIT

The most basic command and the cornerstone of proper social behavior is the sit command.  The sit command can be used to teach your giant schnauzer puppies to control themselves in situations where other people or things are involved.  Any dog may become excited when a person approaches the house, when an owner arrives at home or when food is being introduced.  By learning to obey the sit command, the giant schnauzer puppies will learn to remain calm in these and other situations.  The sit command also lays the foundation for training on other commands.

STAY

Giant schnauzer puppies will want to follow their loved ones from place to place and be involved in any interesting activity.  Teaching the giant schnauzer puppies to sit will not necessarily keep them in one place.  Some dogs have a natural desire to chase, run and play.  The stay command can be combined with the sit command to maintain control in a social situation.

DOWN

Giant schnauzer puppies are an active breed of dog.  At times, however, the situation may call for passivity.  The down command can be used to teach your puppy to lay on the ground until in these situations.  For example, if small children are running and playing, the down command can be used to ensure the giant schnauzer puppies do not unintentionally injure the children in an act of overzealous playfulness.  Many times the down command will be used in conjunction with a release command to keep the Giant in a down position for the time necessary.  The down command can also be used as the foundation for more advanced training and commands.

COME

Teaching your giant schnauzer puppies to come when commanded to do so can assist in developing proper social behavior in crowds, around other dogs and in active situations.  This command can be used when the giant schnauzer puppies are distracted by other activity, people or animals.  The come command will also teach the Giant who the "leader" is in the relationship.

HEEL

The heel command can be a great tool for active giant schnauzer owners.  Walking a Giant on a leash can be challenging, especially when they reach their full size and strength.  The heel command can be used to teach your giant schnauzer puppies to remain by your side for walks, runs and other activities.  Slightly more advanced than the other basic commands, proper heeling generally means that your Giant will walk or run by your side.  This can help control the Giant as well as keep both owner and dog safe, avoiding wandering, pulling and running when it is not warranted.

Remember, giant schnauzer puppies love to work and learn.  The intelligence of giant schnauzer puppies will allow them to easily conquer these five basic commands and most likely remain eager to move on to their next task.  The ability of the Giants to learn and do more will depend on the time and effort put in by the puppies family members.  Keep training sessions on single actions or activities short and use rewards for good behavior and you will be amazed at what your giant schnauzer puppies can learn.
